OUR BACKGROUND
TDI-Brooks International, Inc. and its affiliated lab, B&B Laboratories,
Inc. were created in May 1996 by former senior staff of
the Geochemical and Environmental Research Group (GERG) at
Texas A&M University. Dr.
James M. Brooks (President & CEO of TDI-Brooks), Dr. Bernie B.
Bernard (President of B&B Laboratories), Dr. Thomas J.
McDonald (Senior Project Manager at B&B Laboratories),
and others left GERG with the vision of building an Oceanographic
Services Company and a Trace Contaminant Laboratory, outside
of a university setting. They brought with them, and continue
to build, a team of highly trained, motivated individuals
who have a stake in the future vision and financial success
of the business. During just the first two years, TDI-Brooks
and B&B Laboratories were successful in re-establishing
project volume with many previous private industry and government
clients, and since this time they have continuously expanded
their client
list and capabilities.
Prior to TDI-Brooks' inception, Dr. Brooks and his analytical
team conducted many high quality trace contaminant environmental
monitoring programs at GERG. Dr. Brooks was the founder and
Director of GERG at Texas A&M from 1977 to 1995. During
that tenure, they were involved in several national monitoring
programs, including: US Fish & Wildlife Contract (1987
to 1995); NOAA National Status and Trend Mussel Watch Project
(1984 to 1995); and EPA Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
Program - Near Coastal (EMAP-NC) in the Gulf of Mexico, Virginian
and Carolinian Provinces (1991 to 1995).
Operating as TDI-Brooks, in 2000 the team won the Period
IV, 5-year contact for the prestigious NOAA National Status
and Trend Mussel Watch Project (NOAA NS&T) that many
senior staff had been involved in since its commencement in
1985. In 2002, TDI-Brooks won one of the three large multi-year
contracts with the US
Fish & Wildlife Service, worth about $4.5 million
of laboratory analyses over five years. The TDI-Brooks team
was awarded the NOAA contract and the USFWS contract after
analyzing and performing very well on blind test samples.
As a result, TDI-Brooks holds both of the premier multi-year
federal analytical contracts in the U.S. (offshore and inland)
for trace organics analysis.
In the past 5 years, TDI-Brooks has won several
EPA analytical contracts in addition to other federal
agency and private industry contracts, and TDI-Brooks has
also been involved in many Natural Resource Damage Assessment
(NRDA) studies. While at GERG, some of TDI-Brooks senior staff
analyzed the majority of the Exxon Valdez oil spill samples.
Because of B&B Lab's litigation-quality analytical product
(including rigorous sample custody practices and extremely
tight analytical control), the lab is increasingly chosen
for NRDA work. B&B Labs is one of the top two or three
labs in the U.S. that receive damage assessment samples when
an oil spill occurs in U.S. waters. Many of the senior staff
have international reputations as published
scientists in this type of work.
B&B Labs has participated in every highly rigorous and
difficult annual NIST intercalibration
exercise for trace organics since 1997, and has always
ranked in the top group. After years of refining the analytical
process, the lab now offers rapid turn-around analysis of
samples using the highly qualified performance-based methods
specified by the NOAA-NS&T program, the US Fish &
Wildlife Service, and the EPA-EMAP program.
While at GERG, Dr. Brooks and his team had successfully developed
and implemented piston-coring techniques and laboratory methods
for use in deepwater Surface
Geochemical Exploration (SGE). Several key senior and
technical staff transferred their knowledge and expertise
in these areas to TDI-Brooks. TDI-Brooks now operates two ocean-going vessels
that routinely send marine samples to the in-house lab from
all over the world. Since 1996, TDI-Brooks has performed over
100 SGE Coring Programs
(both private and consortium programs), and collected over
8,000 cores worldwide. In 2000, TDI-Brooks expanded its petroleum
prospecting tools to include Heat
Flow Surveys. Recently, Geotechnical
Coring and measurements were also added to the list of
capabilities.
The staff of TDI-Brooks and B&B Laboratories are committed
to increasing scientific understanding in many areas including
oceanography, geochemical processes, analytical geochemistry,
instrumentation, and environmental monitoring, to name a few.
Our clients benefit from the vast knowledge and experience
that our multidisciplinary staff provides.
